The Area

The Dordogne Vallée/Lot region is in the upper part of the ancient province of Quercy – land of history & legend, fairytale castles, spectacular high & low villages & more…… it is one of the most beautiful areas in France with its immense variety of landscape, architecture & history. Much of the charm of this region can be attributed to the undulating countryside with its rivers of the Dordogne, Bavé, Autoire & Vezere; the continuing presence of small farms, its food & wines; the charming villages - bastide towns – chateaux; its wealth of history & the warmth & hospitality of the people.

The Climate

Spring & autumn are usually warm with sunny days & pleasant evenings. Summers can become quite hot with temperatures ranging from mid 20’s C to mid 30’s C, but with the Villa situated at an elevation of 300 metres (1100 feet) – the evenings are usually mild. From late spring thru to early autumn the sunsets are magnificent, bathing the Villa in a crimson glow. From the terrace you have a vista of rolling hills & of far off villages as you relax with a local wine and baguettes, foie gras (paté), terrines, local cheeses etc.

Winter temperatures range from 0 to 10 C & it can drop below zero. On occasions the village receives light snow which lasts for a day or two.

Restaurants

There are many restaurants nearby and venturing into those of the smaller villages is a rewarding experience as the ambience & food is more likely to be authentic to the region and more reasonably priced.

The People

The local people are warm & friendly, as are those of the nearby towns & regions & they are accustomed to English speaking tourists. In the village of La Teuliere only a few of the local people speak English & therefore, it is useful if some French is spoken (but not essential). This should not be of concern as Ms Christine Ducoux (next door neighbour) who services our Villa speaks very good English & is very helpful. The village can also be quite international at times, as some the houses are owned by English, Belgian, American, Australian & French families who either live there permanently or holiday there frequently.
